Homemade Hot Cross Buns: A Healthier Take on a Classic Favourite

Few things feel as comforting as the smell of freshly baked hot cross buns coming out of the oven. Soft, lightly spiced, and filled with fruity goodness, hot cross buns are a seasonal favourite — but store-bought versions are often packed with added sugars, preservatives, and refined ingredients. Making your own at home allows you to enjoy this classic treat in a more nourishing and mindful way.

Homemade hot cross buns give you control over what goes into your food, making it easier to choose better-quality ingredients and reduce unnecessary additives. Baking can also be a grounding activity — slowing down, getting hands-on, and reconnecting with what you eat, which aligns perfectly with the Medshield Movement philosophy of holistic wellbeing.

Homemade Hot Cross Bun Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups cake or bread flour

  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast

  • 1½ teaspoons mixed spice

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ cup sugar or honey

  • 1 cup warm milk

  • 50g melted butter or olive oil

  • 1 egg

  • ¾ cup raisins or sultanas

For the cross:

  • ½ cup flour

  • 5 tablespoons water

For the glaze:

  • 2 tablespoons honey or apricot jam

  • 2 tablespoons hot water

Method:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, yeast, spices, salt, and sugar.

  2. Add the warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.

  3. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. Gently knead in the raisins.

  5. Cover and allow the dough to rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  6. Divide into equal portions and shape into buns. Place on a lined baking tray.

  7. Mix the flour and water for the cross, pipe over the buns.

  8. Bake at 180°C for 20–25 minutes until golden.

  9. Mix the glaze ingredients and brush over warm buns.

Enjoy Mindfully

Serve warm with a little butter, nut butter, or yoghurt for added protein. Homemade hot cross buns are best enjoyed fresh but can be frozen and reheated for convenience.

At Medshield Movement, we believe balance is key — enjoying traditional foods while making choices that support your health. Baking your own hot cross buns is a beautiful way to honour tradition, nourish your body, and create moments of connection around the table.

Happy baking — and happy moving!
